Deadly cold weather has brought what meteorologists call a "once-in-a-generation" deep freeze to the US.

N. Atlantic’s Cold Year

For the last few years, observers have been speculating about when the North Atlantic will start the next phase shift from warm to cold. Given the way 2018 went, this may be the onset.  First some background.

An example is this report in May 2015 The Atlantic is entering a cool phase that will change the world's weather by Gerald McCarthy and Evan Haigh of the RAPID Atlantic monitoring project. Excerpts in italics with my bolds.

This is known as the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), and the transition between its positive and negative phases can be very rapid. For example, Atlantic temperatures declined by 0.1ºC per decade from the 1940s to the 1970s. By comparison, global surface warming is estimated at 0.5ºC per century – a rate twice as slow.

In many parts of the world, the AMO has been linked with decade-long temperature and rainfall trends. Certainly – and perhaps obviously – the mean temperature of islands downwind of the Atlantic such as Britain and Ireland show almost exactly the same temperature fluctuations as the AMO.

Atlantic oscillations are associated with the frequency of hurricanes and droughts. When the AMO is in the warm phase, there are more hurricanes in the Atlantic and droughts in the US Midwest tend to be more frequent and prolonged. In the Pacific Northwest, a positive AMO leads to more rainfall.

A negative AMO (cooler ocean) is associated with reduced rainfall in the vulnerable Sahel region of Africa. The prolonged negative AMO was associated with the infamous Ethiopian famine in the mid-1980s. In the UK it tends to mean reduced summer rainfall – the mythical "barbeque summer".Our results show that ocean circulation responds to the first mode of Atlantic atmospheric forcing, the North Atlantic Oscillation, through circulation changes between the subtropical and subpolar gyres – the intergyre region. This a major influence on the wind patterns and the heat transferred between the atmosphere and ocean.

The observations that we do have of the Atlantic overturning circulation over the past ten years show that it is declining. As a result, we expect the AMO is moving to a negative (colder surface waters) phase. This is consistent with observations of temperature in the North Atlantic.

Cold "blobs" in North Atlantic have been reported, but they are usually a winter phenomena. For example in April 2016, the sst anomalies looked like this

But by September, the picture changed to this

And we know from Kaplan AMO dataset, that 2016 summer SSTs were right up there with 1998 and 2010 as the highest recorded.

As the graph above suggests, this body of water is also important for tropical cyclones, since warmer water provides more energy.  But those are annual averages, and I am interested in the summer pulses of warm water into the Arctic. As I have noted in my monthly HadSST3 reports, most summers since 2003 there have been warm pulses in the north atlantic.
amo december 2018The AMO Index is from from Kaplan SST v2, the unaltered and not detrended dataset. By definition, the data are monthly average SSTs interpolated to a 5×5 grid over the North Atlantic basically 0 to 70N.  The graph shows the warmest month August beginning to rise after 1993 up to 1998, with a series of matching years since.  December 2016 set a record at 20.6C, but note the plunge down to 20.2C for  December 2018, matching 2011 as the coldest years  since 2000.  Because McCarthy refers to hints of cooling to come in the N. Atlantic, let's take a closer look at some AMO years in the last 2 decades.

This graph shows monthly AMO temps for some important years. The Peak years were 1998, 2010 and 2016, with the latter emphasized as the most recent. The other years show lesser warming, with 2007 emphasized as the coolest in the last 20 years. Note the red 2018 line is at the bottom of all these tracks.  Most recently December 2018 is 0.4C lower than December 2016, and is the coolest December since 2000.

With all the talk of AMOC slowing down and a phase shift in the North Atlantic, it seems the annual average for 2018 confirms that cooling has set in.  Through December the momentum is certainly heading downward, despite the band of warming ocean  that gave rise to European heat waves last summer.

Texas town’s environmental narcissism makes Al Gore happy while sticking its citizens with the bill

I covered this story of Georgetown last month here.

But there is more detail emerging on just how much local citizens are having to pay for their mayor's green virtue signalling:

Political leaders in a college town in central Texas won wide praise from former Vice President Al Gore and the larger Green Movement when they decided to go "100 percent renewable" seven years ago. Now, however, they are on the defensive over electricity costs that have their residents paying more than $1,000 per household in higher electricity charges over the last four years.

That's right – $1,219 per household in higher electricity costs for the 71,000 residents of Georgetown, Texas, all thanks to the decision of its Republican mayor, Dale Ross, to launch a bold plan to shift the city's municipal utility to 100 percent renewable power in 2012 when he was on the city council.

In short order, Ross was elevated to celebrity status, appearing in scores of articles and videos, both at home and abroad. Al Gore made it a point to feature the Texas Republican mayor at renewable energy conferences as well. Ross was even featured in one of Gore's documentaries.

But while Ross was being lauded far and wide, the residents of his town were paying a steep price. His decision to bet on renewables resulted in the city budget getting dinged by a total of $29.8 million in the four years from 2015 to 2018. Georgetown's electric costs were $3.5 million over budget in 2015, ballooning to $6.3 million in 2016, the same year the mayor locked his municipal utility into 20- and 25-year wind and solar energy contracts to make good on his 100 percent renewable pledge.

By 2017, the mayor's green gamble was undercut by the cheap natural gas prices brought about by the revolution in high-tech fracking. Power that year cost the city's budget $9.5 million more than expected, rising to $10.5 million last year, according to budget documents reported by The Williamson County Sun.

Whether Mayor Ross and his colleagues on the Georgetown City Council were motivated by good intentions, political machinations, or mere vanity is unknown. What is known is that Georgetown's municipal utility, an integral part of the city budget, is hemorraging red ink thanks to those long term renewable energy contracts.

The mayor, who not long ago was approaching ubiquitous status with the media, could not be found by the local press to comment on his city's budget-busting power deficit.

The deficits were triggered by the drop in natural gas prices—now the mainstay of the U.S. electric grid, having displaced coal—which caused the city to sell its surplus wind and solar power at a steep discount into Texas' wholesale energy market. City leaders had to lock in a large excess of wind and solar power to be able to lend credibility to their 100 percent renewable claim, since wind and solar power can't be relied on to keep the lights on 24/7/365. And, even with that surplus, there are times when Georgetown draws traditional fossil fuel power from the Texas grid, making the city's "100 percent renewable" claim nothing more than spurious sloganeering.

That a city in Texas (which voted for President Trump) claimed to be "100 percent renewable" generated significant "man bites dog" notoriety. But as University of Houston energy expert Charles McConnell noted, "It's not kind of misleading, it's very misleading, and it is for political gain."

Most Texas residents have the ability to choose their electricity provider in a competitive statewide market, leading to electricity prices that are among the lowest in the nation: 18 percent below the national average in 2018, and 48 percent below prices in green energy pacesetter California.

But Texas' electricity market excludes municipal utilities like Georgetown's from competition, leaving consumers without choice and allowing political decisions – rather than market forces – to determine the mix of electricity suppliers.

Georgetown is now trying to renegotiate its costly long-term wind and solar energy contracts—this, after the city council agreed to skimp on needed electric infrastructure investment to make up their budgetary shortfall.

Mayor Ross had previously revelled in trolling President Trump, boasting to a German TV show that, "I make decisions based on facts… unlike the president," then opining that "It was a huge mistake to withdraw from the Paris climate accords…"

One wonders what Mayor Ross thinks about the ongoing unrest in France, initially sparked by a climate change fuel tax hike that has since been rescinded, under pressure, by President Macron.

The mayor, who not long ago was approaching ubiquitous status with the media, could not be found by the local press to comment on his city's budget-busting power deficit, declining to comment by both phone and email.

Meanwhile, Texas legislators – who are unlikely to wind up on German TV – have the power to introduce a  bill with the potential to free Georgetown's ratepayers from the city's electric monopoly, giving them the same ability to shop around for electricity now enjoyed by some 20 million of their fellow Texans.

The current cost of this virtue signalling is now up to $10.5m a year, which is $136 for every man, woman and child in Georgetown.

And, as I noted in my earlier post, the whole 100% renewables claim is a sham anyway, as the city is still reliant on power from the Texas grid.

The only way Georgetown can claim the 100% is to buy so much wind and solar power in advance contracts, as to sure there is enough when there is no wind. But this automatically means that the city has huge surpluses of power at other times during the year.

This surplus has to be sold off, which usually means at a huge loss. After all, when wind and solar power are abundant, market prices fall.

Of course, if every city followed suit and committed to 100% renewables, there would be nobody around to buy up that surplus, as everybody else would be in the same boat.

But at least they'd be able to parade their green credentials!

Solar Cycle 24 Going Down As Quietest In Almost 200 Years, May Put The Brakes On Warming

Our sun was also very sub-normally active in December last year. We are writing the 121st month since the beginning of cycle number 24, in December 2008, and since 2012 (when we started the blog here) we could only reformulate the opening sentence once: In September 2017 when the sun was 13% more active than the long-term (since 1755) average.

All other months were below average. With the sunspot number (SSN) of 3.1 for the monthly average for December and a total of 24 days without any spot (throughout the second half of the month the sun was spotless) we are in the middle of the cycle minimum.

Since October 2017 (cycle month 108) we have been at the minimum and the next cycle should start at the beginning of 2020. The blue curve is the respective monthly average over the 23 cycles completed so far. The black curve (for comparison) SC 5, which was recorded around 1815 and was as similarly weak as the current cycle.

The following chart compares all the cycles observed thus far:

Clearly SC 24 is the lowest activity since the Dalton Minimum (SC 5,6,7) around 1810 when using the entire cycle and not only the maximum activity in short peaks (see Fig. 1).

When does the new Cycle 25 begin? This is very difficult to say. In December a total of 3 spots were observed that belong to the new cycle because they are magnetically polarized the other way around than those of the old cycle. This January we are currently still seeing a lot of the "old cycle" again, so forecasts are probably premature. If something happens, here be the first to know!

Digital tech is changing the oil exploration game

The oil industry is not about to go away and die quietly, contrary to the wishes of climate alarmists – far from it.

A new exploration technique has uncovered a deposit containing more than 1.5 billion barrels of crude oil in Alaska's North Slope, reports OilPrice.com.

Digital technology adoption in all stages of upstream operations in the oil and gas industry has seen a steep rise recently.

While a lot has been written about the benefits of digitizing various aspects of the well-drilling, extraction, and field maintenance processes, there is also another major field where digital tech is changing the game: before the well-drilling even begins.

In Alaska, for instance, new technology in oil and gas exploration has led to the discovery of more than 1.5 billion barrels of crude oil in the North Slope in just two years, S&P Global Platts recently reported.

These are deposits that were known to be there but the resources they held could not be mapped or measured, so the deposits were considered unproductive before digital tech, in the form of advanced 3D seismic surveys and new data processing techniques, came along.

So, established exploration methods are one area where there is a surge of improvements but there are also alternative exploration techniques emerging, such as soil analysis.

A Dutch company, Biodentify, collects thousands of soil samples to analyze the DNA of thousands of microorganisms for traces of hydrocarbons in their environment. The company utilizes machine learning for the task and to calculate the potential reserves of a deposit with, according to the company, more than 70 percent accuracy.

What's more, the whole procedure takes between 6 and 10 weeks, which is a relatively short time, especially in light of the fact that it reduces the risk of drilling unproductive wells.

Who We Are, And Who We Are Not — Guest Post by Ianto Watt

The article "The Missing Link of Jewish European Ancestry: Contrasting the Rhineland and the Khazarian Hypotheses", by Eran Elhaik only now pooped into my Inbox. It came out in 2013, just when my book was published.

They both tell the same story and come to the same conclusion. They confirm the "Khazarian hypothesis", which is "that Eastern European Jews descended from the Khazars, an amalgam of Turkic clans that settled the Caucasus in the early centuries CE and converted to Judaism in the 8th century." It makes me feel vindicated.

Non-Christian Scientists have entered the arena of a heretofore taboo subject. And amazingly, they have unknowingly aligned themselves with their erstwhile enemies, Holy Rome. Or, at least, Historical Rome. Versus Hysterical Rome, the birthplace of modern Malthusianism and the Club of Rome.

The naysayers have their statistical-methodological complaints about such studies. But the fact remains that Elhaik's opponents, who like Elhaik are all Jewish, cannot explain where all the Jews of Europe came from, numerically speaking, if they didn't come from Khazaria. Their Rhineland hypothesis requires incredible feats of fertility, for hundreds of years on end, with absolutely no evidence of such an incredible happening.

What is this taboo of which I speak? And what does this article have to do with that same subject? Wait, first let's look around to see who is listening. You can't be too careful, you know! The taboo, of course, is the most-deadly of all: Anti-semitism.

What does Scientific Rome (and Elhaik's article in particular) have to say about this dark subject that could possibly be different from the past century of calumny for anyone who failed to bend the knee to the edict of political correction? How could anyone (Jews included) have the chutzpah to question modern wisdom?

Here it is: science has now confirmed (to the extent anything is certain in this insane world) what some of us already knew. Some people, and maybe all of us, aren't who we say we are. Yes, and this conclusion has been reached through the rigors of the priesthood of the gods of Science! It is enough to make one faint. Identity Theft, writ large. The hijacking of entire peoples, and their actual past.

Who else are not whom they claim to be? Is it the Irish? No, but that's always a good guess, because nobody will admit to being their ancestors. [Editor's note: recall Watt is Welsh.] What about the British? Well, you're getting closer. After all, the Anglish always enjoy dressing in British drag, even though they are the polar opposites. But me and mine have always known that the Anglish bastards only claim the name when it suits them. Which is quite often. Especially their Saxon royalty and their claims of royal ownership of my island. To Hell with them.

Let's start with a couple of easy examples of national identity theft. You've heard of the British Israelites, right? No? Well, you're young, but you can look it up. Read my book. Or Wikipedia. The British Israelites are the people (many of whom occupied high places in the Empire) who claim that the Anglish (in British dress) are really the descendants of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel. But they're no more Jewish (or British) than the man in the moon. That hasn't stopped them in their drive for Empire. And the British Commonwealth was actually a pretty good run at the title. But again, Scientific Rome has put the nix on the idea of the 10 Tribes making their way intact to Albion. Or anywhere.

Now, what about the Israelite British? Look closely at that name. You'll never see it anywhere but here. Tough you've probably heard of them under another name. You know, all those Chosen Ones who claim that, regardless of their genetic and cultural heritage, they are actually British? You know, Lord Rosebury and his friends. Yes, the Lord who married Hannah de Rothschild, the daughter of Meyer Amschel de Rothschild, in 1878.

These are the people who, despite their matrilineal heritage, claim to be authentically British. This, despite the fact that they are no more British than Churchill, that mongrel dog. The true Brits are the remainder of Arthur's legions, known as the Welsh and the West Welsh (Cornish) today. You know, the last ones that stood up to the Anglo-Saxons way back when. The bastards who stole my island. And yes, I want it back. But I'm not holding my breath. Yes, I know, you've never heard of any of this.

Let's plunge on. Have you ever heard of the Palestinians? Can you tell me who they are? No, I mean, who they actually descend from. Don't tell me the Arabs. That's a racial classification. And it's wrong. Tell me who they came from, specifically. Let's ask some experts.

First is Paul Wexler, a Hebrew. Paul wondered about this same thing: who are the Palestinians? And Paul decided that something was weird about the common understanding of things.

Being a linguistic savant, he went on a little journey, which took him throughout Palestine. He wrote an interesting little book about it (cited in my book). Then there is another savvy Jew, Arthur Koestler, who wrote The Thirteenth Tribe. He apostasized from the Bolshevik Faith with his other incredible book, Darkness at Noon.

Let's also remember Shlomo Sand (another non-Jewish Jew) and his great work, The Invention of the Jewish People, and his follow-on, The Invention of the Jewish Nation.

All three of these guys, Wexler, Koestler and Sand, were cited in Elhaik's study. And in my book. And we're all in agreement. What do we agree on? Simply this: everything the world knows is wrong. Well, almost everything. But close enough for horseshoes.

What is Palestine? You know, that Roman name attached to that silly sliver of land that's caused all of those Caesars all those headaches. Well, Palestine is a made-up name. A name that tried to erase the previous names of Galilee and Judea and Samaria, which erased the name of Canaan. Just like Aelia Capitolina was the Roman attempt to erase the name of Jerusalem after Titus leveled the joint. That's the whole point of this article: if the public doesn't like something, just re-brand it, and then they will buy it like hotcakes.

Let's get back to Wexler. He wondered about the names of people and places throughout the Levant. Yes, one of the other names for Palestine. Wexler did some digging and found that the modern names for all those modern Palestinian people and towns and villages throughout the Levant were actually Jewish names that had been bastardized over the centuries. The centuries of Muslim domination. The centuries that began with the then-current occupants (Christians and Jews alike) being given the peace-loving choice of Islam: convert or die. Or, if you want what's behind Door Number Three, the Jizyah Tax. You can keep your faith, you infidel, if you keep it private, and pay the tax. Let's see how long your progeny can keep your faith when you pick that door. A millennium later, take a look. They're all Muslims. Jewish Muslims, to be exact.

In other words, Sabra, the Palestinians (for the most part) are of Jewish descent. And of coerced Muslim conversion. Here's the funniest part. Since the beginnings of the Zionist Movement, they have been displaced by Khazars from Central Asia who claim ownership of Palestine based on their supposed Abrahamic roots! This wasn't my idea: it's Wexler's and Koestler's and Sand's. And Elhaik's.

Any other big cases of national identity theft on the horizon, Komrade? Actually, yes. Perhaps the most bizarre of all. It is the case of the Russians. Of course, you knew this had to end with Russia, da? And why not? After all, they all believe it. The only problem here, you silly muzhik, is that there are no real Russians. Nope, none at all.

No Russians? What can this mean? It's simple, my friend. Their real name is this: Slavs. And their identity was stolen by the Rus'. The descendants of Rurik, the (Swedish) Varangian Viking prince. Oh, and yes, by the Khazars. The same guys that stole Scythia and then decided to convert to Judaism. We know them as the Ashkenazi Jews. Vikings from the north, Scythians from the south. The hammer of Thor, the sickle of Scythia. Now do you understand that Red Flag? Those two have alternately ruled 'Russia' since the 800's. Except for the Mongols, who had a nice little run for 200 hundred years. Everyone has ruled Russia except the Slavs.

Who are those people who call themselves Russians today? They are the same as they were at the time of Caesar Augustus. They are the slaves of the east. They serve the Caesars (and Khans) who have captured them. And so, linguistically, those whom Caesar knew as 'the Sclavus' have become 'the slaves' of the Eastern Caesars (Tsars) unto today. Today, they serve the Emperor of the Third Rome. That would be Vlad Putin, of course. And they are still in thrall to the legend of their name. A name that means something entirely different to them than to the idiots in the West today.

Slav means The Word to these descendants of Japheth. It means the word Glory. The word by which they claim the world will be redeemed. This redemption will be delivered via the Orthodox Church. Why? Because the Slavs are the only vehicle left for the Orthodox rebellion against Holy Rome. And if the Slavic people are willing to be used, in their thrall to their ancient Pagan beliefs, why wouldn't the Orthodox use them? Why not take advantage of a spirit of political rebellion that rejects the West as being oppressive to the East? It's so easy to substitute a false religious objection for a legitimate political objection. Especially when the two are so closely intertwined. That political/religious rebellion came when the Patriarch Photius, in 860, repeated those infamous words, 'I will not serve'. In reality, he was speaking against the Emperor as much as the Pope. Why? Because he was neither, but wanted to be both.

Once again, a people confuse their King with their High Priest. Jews did it. The Imperial Romans did it. The Greco-Romans did it. The Anglo-Americans have done it. And, of course, the Slavs have done it. They have all given their Kings the allegiance they owed their true High Priest. How? By giving their spiritual allegiance to the leader of a nationalistic church that is subservient to the Emperor-of-the-moment. And the results have always been the same: slavery. Slavery to an Imperial vision that is completely at odds with their national origins. A slavery that is entirely at odds with their spiritual origins.

That statement is at the root of all of mankind's history unto today. I will not serve. Anybody. And that history is at the root of Western degeneration, from the time of Luther and Henry, unto today. But meanwhile, in their desire to resist Western domination, the 'Russians' of today have made themselves the slaves of the Eastern Emperor, who carries this standard of rebellion against the West. Truthfully, they should indeed resist the leprous body of the Imperial West of today. But because everyone tends to confuse Imperial Rome and Holy Rome, they continue to confuse when it is licit to resist a corrupt temporal power and when it is licit to reject a bad spiritual power.

This, after all, is simply the same excuse the Samaritans used to resist the High Priest in Jerusalem. Sure, political resistance is often sanctioned by God, as it was with the Samaritans and their King Jeroboam. When you go one step further and resist his appointed High Priest, you cross the line. The line which will cause your loss of freedom, both politically and spiritually. This is what has happened all throughout history. Why? Because mankind always mixes the roles of Caesar and Messiah, and there is never a happy ending when this occurs.

Therein lies the danger. We have confused our own identity. Whatever our own national identity is (or was), we have lost sight of the fact that our real identity is as a citizen of Heaven. Yes, we have all been led astray by our temporal leaders. Leaders who are always willing to comingle our ideas of our spiritual and temporal heritage. The one is eternal, the other is not.

The Jews lost their national identity when they claimed Caesar as their king, while rejecting their own High Priest. The Greeks lost theirs when they took up the mantle of Imperial Rome, but followed Photius into the schism (and then heresy) of Eastern Orthodoxy. The British lost their identity when they followed King Henry into the abyss of schism (and now heresy) of Western Orthodoxy. The Russians lost their identity when they took up the Orthodox vision of Third Rome as expressed by their pagan Viking Overlords. Americans lost theirs when Lincoln led us unto national destruction, while quoting his Puritan scriptures.

We have all lost our national identity. All of us. But ultimately, it doesn't matter. Why?
Remember, at one time we were all of one tongue. One nationality. It was the time before the Tower of Babel. Before the division of mankind into the 72 nations of the earth was done by God. This division was a blessing meant to keep us from imagining and acting upon a vain thing. From imagining that we could vault into the heavens without dying. From imagining that we could escape our sins without remorse. Our separation into separate nations was God's means of keeping us from working, as one, to reject the original purpose of man. That purpose? To glorify God.

Now, here we are, re-assembling under the shadow of The Tower. All nations having lost their God-given uniqueness. All nations re-assembling under the unifying tongue of the digital world. All nations working towards the vision of a single global identity. All nations at war against God.

We're finally at the end of the trail. Or, actually, the beginning. The beginnings of Paganism, and the first Pagan, Nimrod. The man who built the Tower. The man who commanded the allegiance of (almost) all men. Back when all men spoke with one tongue. And all heard with one ear. What was it they heard, when Nimrod spoke to them?

The story of how all the ancient fathers (Adam, et al.), had become gods, and they had taken their position in the skies above. Yes, they had become the stars and the planets that guided all men on earth. And here was the part that solidified Nimrod's power. He told the people that they, too, could join the pantheon of the skies without having to die. All they had to do was to build the tower into the skies. And thus, enter the pantheon.

Now, again, here we are, still back in Iraq. Back in the shadow of the Tower of Babel. And what is it that we are doing there? We are imagining a vain and wicked thing.

Removal of benzene by non-thermal plasma catalysis over manganese oxides through a facile synthesis method

Abstract

Three manganese oxide catalysts (MnOx) were synthesized via a simple method, and then they were introduced into the non-thermal plasma (NTP) system for benzene removal. The XRD and EXAFS results showed the MnOx were mainly in the Mn3O4 phase, and from the analysis of N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, we knew the MnOx calcined at 250 °C (Mn250) had the largest surface area of 274.5 m2 g−1. Besides, Mn250 also exerted higher benzene adsorption capacity (0.430 mmol g−1) according to C6H6-TPD. O2-TPD indicated that Mn250 showed better oxygen mobility than Mn300. Moreover, by analyzing XPS results, it revealed that Mn250 exhibited rich abundant of surface adsorbed oxygen species (Oads) and moderate ratio of Mn4+/Mn3+, and the reducibility temperature was also the lowest among all the MnOx catalysts drawn by H2-TPR profiles. As a result, Mn250 combined with NTP could remove 96.9% of benzene at a low input power of 3 W (benzene concentration 200 ppm, and GHSV 60,000 mL gcat.−1 h−1), performing the best catalytic activity among the three catalysts and plasma only. Furthermore, the "NTP + Mn250" system also produced the highest CO2 concentration and lowest CO concentration in downstream, and the residual O3 after catalytic reaction was also the lowest, that is to say, the synergistic effect between NTP and Mn250 was more effective than other catalysts in benzene removal.

Construction of precious metal-loaded BiOI semiconductor materials with improved photocatalytic activity for microcystin-LR degradation

Abstract

The composite photocatalyst of precious metal loaded on BiOI (M/BiOI, M = Pt, Au, Ag) was prepared by photochemical deposition and used for the photocatalytic degradation of microcystins (MC-LR). The material was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), ultraviolet visible (UV-vis) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and photoluminescence spectra (PL). The effect of photodegradation of MC-LR and the possible mechanism were investigated. It turned out that, among precious metals of Pt, Au, and Ag, Ag had the most significant improvement for photocatalytic activity of BiOI and Au was the least. The Ag/BiOI catalyst was illuminated 2 h under the simulated visible-light condition with the optimal load ratio of Ag catalyst (1.0 wt%) and the 2-h illumination under simulated visible-light condition, the degradation rate of MC-LR was 61.26% ± 0.12%. In addition, through the experiment of trapping agent and the analysis of electron spin resonance (ESR), we could conclude that the main active species is O2 in the process of the degradation of MC-LR by three precious metal-loaded BiOI semiconductor materials.

Pond-bottom decomposition of leaf litters canopied by free-floating vegetation

Abstract

In wetland ecosystems, vegetation can float freely on water surface, forming dense canopy which may play important ecological roles. This is especially true in many urban wetlands in which fluidity is low and nutrient level is high. So far, effects of free-floating vegetation on abiotic and biotic factors of wetlands have been known, while little on wetland ecosystem functions such as litter decomposition. To examine whether the canopy of free-floating vegetation on water surface will influence litter decomposition in wetlands or not, we conducted a 50-day in situ decomposition experiment in a subtropical urban pond wetland, in which litter bags of nine combinations of three mesh sizes and three litter species were put on the bottoms of total 22 ponds which were half with and half without free-floating vegetation canopy on the water surface. The ponds with and without the canopy had different water physicochemical properties. Overall, the canopy, the species identity, and the mesh size significantly decelerated mass loss and carbon loss of leaf litters while slightly on nitrogen loss. Effects of the canopy on leaf litter decomposition also showed species- and mesh size-dependent. Our results suggest that free-floating vegetation on water surface can alter water environmental factors and consequently change ecosystem functioning in wetlands.

Partitioning characteristic of chlorine ion in gas and solid phases in process of desulfurization wastewater evaporation: model development and calculation

Abstract

Since the promulgation of "Water Pollution Control Action Plan " in China, zero liquid discharge of desulfurization wastewater has become a new trend of power plant water pollution control. Aiming at the application of desulfurization wastewater evaporation technology using high-temperature flue gas, simulation and experimental research on quantifying and predicting gas-solid partitioning of chlorine ion under different operation conditions are carried out in this paper. The gas-liquid equilibrium theory is applied to the complex mixed salt system; based on state equation, the semi-empirical model of gas-solid phase partitioning coefficient of chlorine ion is calculated, with high degree of fitting range from 180 to 380 °C. The essential effects of pH, Cl concentration, and total dissolved solids (TDS) on the gas-solid phase partitioning coefficient of chlorine ion are investigated. The study provides key data for the application of evaporation technology using high-temperature flue gas, obtaining the quantification and prediction of chlorine ion volatilization during desulfurization wastewater evaporation.

H 3 PO 4 -activated carbons produced from açai stones and Brazil nut shells: removal of basic blue 26 dye from aqueous solutions by adsorption

Abstract

The adsorption characteristics of C.I. basic blue 26 (BB26) from aqueous solutions onto H3PO4-activated carbons (ACs) produced from açai stones (Euterpe oleracea Martius) and Brazil nut shells (Bertholletia excelsa H. B. K) were investigated in a batch system. The ACs were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, N2 adsorption at 77 K, mercury porosimetry, and acidity/basicity analysis. The pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order kinetic models and intraparticle diffusion model were used for the kinetic interpretations. The adsorption processes follow the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The Boyd plots revealed that the adsorption processes were mainly controlled by film diffusion. Equilibrium data were analyzed by the Langmuir and Freundlich models, at different temperatures. The equilibrium data were best represented by the Langmuir isotherm. The adsorption processes were found to be favorable, exothermic, and spontaneous. The açai stones and Brazil nut shells-based ACs were shown to be effective adsorbents for removal of BB26 from aqueous solutions.
